What is Domain Protection?
Domain Protection helps safeguard your domains against common risks, including accidental expiry, unauthorised transfers and unwanted changes to important settings. It adds an extra layer of security to your existing domain registration through features such as Registrar Lock, verification for sensitive changes and proof of ownership.
Please note: Domain Protection does not replace the need to renew your domains on time (see “Renewals & transfers” below).
Which plans are available?
We currently offer the Domain Protection Essential package. It includes the following features:
| Feature | Essential |
| Scope | Per domain |
| WHOIS Privacy (where the TLD supports it) | Yes |
| Registrar Lock (where the TLD supports it) | Yes |
| 2FA on sensitive actions (EPP code, unlock, contact changes) | Yes |
| Domain Registration Certificate | Yes |
What happens to the existing WHOIS Privacy service?
You can still purchase WHOIS Privacy as an individual feature. If you purchase the Essential package while WHOIS Privacy is active on a domain, we deduct the value of the remaining WHOIS Privacy period from the Domain Protection price.
Coverage & eligibility
Does Essential cover all my domains?
Essential is applied per domain, so the package must be activated separately for each domain you want to protect. If a TLD does not support a specific feature, the system automatically applies the best available protection for that domain.
What if my TLD doesn’t support a feature?
Some registries restrict certain features, most commonly WHOIS Privacy and Registrar Lock. In these cases:
- Clear messaging: Your control panel explains when a feature is unavailable for a specific domain extension (e.g. “Registrar Lock is not available for this domain extension”), so you know exactly what to expect.
- Best available protection: We automatically apply the best available protection for that domain extension.
- Continued protection: Other features, including 2FA for sensitive actions, the Domain Registration Certificate and expiry safeguards, remain available where supported.
How do I know what my specific domain supports?
The live indicator in your domaindiscount24 control panel is the most reliable source of information. Open the relevant domain and go to the protection panel to see which features are available for that domain extension, along with a brief explanation of any unavailable features.
As registry policies can change, the control panel always shows the most up-to-date information for your domain.
Which TLDs are supported for Registrar Lock and WHOIS Privacy?
Domain Protection supports a wide range of TLDs: more than 900 extensions support Registrar Lock and more than 780 support WHOIS Privacy, including the most commonly used extensions.
The quick reference below covers the extensions customers ask about most often. For any extension not listed, please check the domain’s protection panel for the latest feature availability.

Legend: Yes = supported · No = not supported by the registry. This is a reference subset; your control panel shows the definitive status for every domain.
Which TLDs are eligible for Registrar (Transfer) Lock?
Registrar Lock is supported on more than 900 extensions, including all major gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz), popular new TLDs (.io, .ai, .app, .dev, .shop, .online, .store and hundreds more) and many ccTLDs such as .uk, .us, .ca, .fr, .cn, .in and .sg.
Not supported due to registry policy, including: .de, .es, .it, .nl, .eu, .ch, .jp, .ru,, .cz, .co.nz, .at, .dk, .pl, .pt, .ie, .fi, .no, .se, .nu, .ad, .ro, .gr, .com.br.
Which TLDs are eligible for WHOIS Privacy?
WHOIS Privacy is supported on more than 780 extensions, covering virtually all common gTLDs and new TLDs.
Not supported due to registry restrictions, including: .ca, .ch, .cn, .co.uk, .com.au, .de, .es, .eu, .fr, .id, .in, .nl, .nu, .nyc, .org.uk, .sg, .uk, .us, .it, .jp, .ru, .se, .be, .at, .dk, .pl, .pt, .ie, .fi, .no, .ro, .gr, .mx, .com.br, .vote.
For many of these, the registry publishes minimal data by default or applies its own privacy model at registry level.
Why protect a domain if my TLD isn’t supported for Registrar Lock or WHOIS Privacy?
Registrar Lock and WHOIS Privacy are only two of the protections, and they are the ones most often affected by registry restrictions. Even without them, Domain Protection still adds real value to that domain:
- Expiry and renewal safeguards and reminders that reduce the risk of accidental loss.
- 2FA on sensitive actions (transfers/EPP code, unlock, contact changes), managed in your account as a verification layer independent of the registry.
- Domain Registration Certificate as portable proof of ownership.
In short, an unsupported lock or privacy feature doesn’t leave the domain unprotected. It just means those specific registry-controlled features aren’t available for that extension.
Domain expiry
What happens if my domain expires?
After expiry, a domain typically moves through these stages:
- Grace period: The domain can still be renewed easily at the normal price.
- Redemption Grace Period (RGP): A registry-defined recovery window that begins after the domain is deleted from the active zone. The domain can usually still be restored to the original owner, but registries normally charge a significant redemption fee.
- Pending delete / release: The domain drops and becomes available for public registration again.
The safest approach is always to renew before the expiry date.
Renewals & transfers
Does Domain Protection replace domain renewal?
No. Domain Protection is a security layer, not a renewal. Your domains must still be renewed before their expiry date. Protection reduces the risk of losing a domain, but it does not keep a domain registered on its own.
How do renewals work with Domain Protection?
Your normal renewal cycle is unchanged: renew as usual before the expiry date (auto-renew is recommended for critical domains). Domain Protection adds expiry safeguards and reminders on top of that. The protection package itself renews alongside your domains.
I have a domain with another provider. Can I transfer it in to protect it?
Yes. You can transfer eligible domains to domaindiscount24 and activate Domain Protection once the transfer is complete. To transfer a domain, you will generally need to:
- unlock the domain at your current provider,
- obtain the authorisation (EPP) code, and
- make sure the domain is outside any registry transfer-lock window (commonly the first 60 days after registration or a previous transfer).
Once the domain is in your account, activate the Essential package for it. Some ccTLDs have registry-specific transfer steps; the control panel will guide you through anything specific to that extension.
